About half are self hosted - Nice! I assume the popularity is helping to drive the plugin development. It’s no longer ‘just’ a blogging platform.

Instead…

I’ve seen it used as a community CMS, billing system, ecommerce system, document management system and so on.

Also, I’ve been VERY surprised that in particular iPhone and Blackberry (RIM) are being left in the dust - Not at all what I would have expected and I don’t think that a good development.

Seems to me that more competition encourages innovation.

Interesting idea, “powered by” vs traditional advertising.

The general idea is that your community gets credit for making content on your blog possible. Meaning it’s an ads free environment as the “powered by” encompasses two primary things:

1) Readers like and want to support your blog.
2) Readers want to increase the visibility of your blog within their community.

From the post:

“…While the Powered By system isn’t designed to send traffic to supporter’s sites, it is designed to add to supporter’s reputations. Anyone who powers the site sees credit on posts, in thank you posts, and on podcasts.
